Dreaming Bigger Dreams: Lessons in Courage and Transformation for Education Leaders

As education leaders, we are often called to guide others through change, uncertainty, and growth. Yet, in the midst of carrying these responsibilities, it can be all too easy to neglect our own inner journeys. In this blog, I want to share some personal insights from my recent experience with transformation and how it has deepened my understanding of leadership, courage, and hope. My hope is that these reflections will inspire you to nurture your own growth and find strength even in the darkest of times.

The Paradox of Leadership: Letting Go to Lead

One of the most challenging lessons I’ve learned is that authentic leadership sometimes requires letting go. As leaders, we are conditioned to believe that we must always be in control, yet some of the most profound transformations happen when we surrender to forces greater than ourselves.

Think of a caterpillar entering its cocoon. In that moment, it must let go of everything it has been to allow something new to emerge. Inside the cocoon, the caterpillar becomes a formless, messy “soup,” and while this stage may seem like chaos, it is actually where its transformation begins. The same is true for us as leaders: the moments when we feel lost, uncertain, or broken often hold the seeds of our greatest growth.

My Journey Through the Cocoon

In August 2023, I was diagnosed with uterine serous carcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. In that instant, my world turned upside down. I had to let go of everything I thought defined me—my role as a coach, leader, and professional. I had to surrender to the unknown and confront my deepest fears.

The days leading up to my surgery were some of the darkest that I have ever experienced. On the morning of the operation, I remember sitting in a cab, crying uncontrollably as the rain poured outside. My body shook with fear and grief. I felt utterly helpless, as though I had entered a space where everything familiar had been stripped away.

But looking back, I see that this darkness was my cocoon—what Bill Plotkin, an eco-psychologist, calls “the uterus of our becoming.” It was a space where transformation could take place, though, at the time, I couldn’t yet see it.

What Nature Teaches Us About Growth

Nature has so much to teach us about transformation. Did you know that within the caterpillar, there are “imaginal cells” that hold the blueprint for what it will become as a butterfly? These cells only activate when the caterpillar dissolves into its unrecognisable state. In the same way, we all carry within us the capacity for profound growth, but this potential often emerges only when we allow ourselves to sit in discomfort, uncertainty, and vulnerability.

This understanding brought meaning to my experience. I saw that my time in the “cocoon” was not just a time of loss but also a time of becoming. As leaders, we are often invited into these spaces—not just for our own sake but also for the sake of those we lead.

Why Inner Growth Matters for Leadership

In education, we are so often focused on external outcomes—improving performance, meeting targets, ensuring compliance. But when we neglect our inner growth, we risk burnout, disconnection, and a lack of the deeper wisdom needed to lead in these times.

Practical Steps for Navigating Dark Times

So, how can we navigate these times of transformation? From my own experience, here are five steps that you might find helpful to consider:

  1. Embrace Vulnerability. Allow yourself to feel everything—the fear, sadness, and uncertainty. These emotions are part of the process.
  2. Turn Inward: Just as nature winters, take time to reflect and be still. This is where growth begins.
  3. Seek Support: Find someone—a therapist, coach, or trusted confidant—who can help you navigate the psychological and emotional layers of your experience.
  4. Counter Fear: Actively work to keep fear and negativity from dominating your inner world. This may involve practices like mindfulness, journaling, or creative expression.
  5. Reconnect with Nature: Spend time outdoors. Nature has a way of grounding us and reminding us of the cycles of life and growth.

These practices awakened something new within me. During my recovery, I began painting, a creative outlet I had never explored before. Painting became a way for me to process my journey and connect with deeper truths about transformation and growth.

Becoming the Leaders Our World Needs

In these times, our children need leaders who can model resilience, courage, and hope. They need leaders who can navigate the darkness and emerge with light.

Maya Angelou once said, “With courage, the light within us will never dim.” But I would add this: courage is not forged in the light. It is forged in the dark. It’s when the lights go out, and we learn to walk in the dark that we discover the true depth of our strength.

So, as you reflect on your own journey, I invite you to dream bigger dreams—for yourself, your schools, and the young people you serve. Transformation is not easy, but it is where our greatest growth happens.
