There’s a lot in the news at the moment about school budgets — and sadly, very little of it offers hope. Just this week, one Trust leader shared, “The challenge of balancing the budget for 2025-26 is the toughest one yet in 10 years of education.”
If you’re a Headteacher or senior leader reading this, you probably know that feeling well. The pressure is immense. Every penny counts, and every financial decision carries weight.
I know, because I’ve been there myself.
A Personal Reflection
When I was a young Headteacher, I hated spending money on myself. Especially when the school budget was tight, the last thing I thought I could afford to do was invest in my own wellbeing or development.
I told myself I had to be strong, resourceful, and keep going — no matter what.
But I learnt the hard way that this was one of the most unwise decisions of my headship career.
Without anyone I could truly trust or talk to, the emotional weight of school leadership became too much to carry alone. And what I thought was a “saving” — not spending money on support for myself — turned into a costly sacrifice.
There was no benefit, only a deep cost to my mental and emotional health. I reached breaking point. After a particularly stressful day and a home visit (that with hindsight, I never should have done) I found myself sobbing my heart out in my car one (late) evening after school. And who did I have to turn to, in a professional context? No one!
Coaching Isn’t a Luxury — It’s a Lifeline
That experience is one of the reasons why I founded Integrity Coaching. I didn’t want other Headteachers to go through what I went through — feeling isolated, overwhelmed, and unsupported at the very time they were being asked to give the most.
That’s why I believe, especially now, that coaching isn’t a luxury. It’s a lifeline.
