As the financial year draws to a close, we know that Headteachers across the country are grappling with the same familiar challenge: making every pound stretch as far as possible. With budgets under strain and ever-growing demands, the weight of responsibility is immense. It’s no surprise, then, that when it comes to setting priorities, the first thing to be sacrificed is often personal investment—especially in professional coaching and support.
The logic is understandable. Schools are underfunded, every budget line must be scrutinised, and the needs of staff and pupils always take precedence. But what if the cost of not investing in yourself is far greater than the financial outlay of doing so?

Having been there myself, I know that Headship is one of the most demanding roles in the public sector. Yet, despite the evidence showing that effective leadership is crucial to school success, many Heads put themselves last, believing they should ‘just get on with it.’ This self-sacrificial mindset is often seen as a mark of dedication—but at what cost?
The statistics paint a stark picture. A report by the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) in 2023 found that 53% of school leaders were actively considering leaving the profession due to unmanageable stress and workload. Meanwhile, a study by Education Support revealed that 84% of senior school leaders reported symptoms of burnout, with many experiencing long-term stress, exhaustion, and feelings of isolation.
Behind these numbers are real stories of leaders who gave everything to their schools but reached a breaking point. Some stepped away from roles they once loved, not because they lacked passion or skill, but because they had nothing left to give. The tragedy? Many of them say, in hindsight, that they wish they had prioritised their own support earlier.

Having coached hundreds of Heads, we know the thought process well that tends to determine financial decision making at this time of year:
“Every penny should go towards the children. I can manage for another year. There’s no budget for me”
