Being a Headteacher is a perilous job…“My role feels all consuming and I feel so alone.” This is what ex ‘head’ Viv Grant wrote in her diary back in 2001, when she was turning around a failing primary school in one of London’s toughest boroughs. The feelings inspired her to write Staying A Head, a practical guide to helping school leaders cope with the increasing pressures of the job.
“Viv Grant has opened the closed world so many school leaders inhabit…and offers practical and effective advice.”
Mike Jones, Head teacher, South Failsworth Primary School, Oldham
“Should be mandatory reading..”
Andrew Parking, Principal, St Dominic’s Sixth Form College, London
When Viv Grant was a school leader she was frustrated with the lack of emotional support and coaching given to heads. “There were plenty of standard, academic texts on topics like leadership and management, but very little in the way of practical advice on how to stay emotionally resilient and socially aware – two areas that I think lie at the heart of being a strong Head,” tells Viv. Viv started her company Integrity Coaching in 2008 and decided to write the honest, down to earth guide on the stresses of headship that she knew her ex colleagues were crying out for. Staying A Head is “a series of coaching sessions in a book” written by someone who has been there and done it, and takes an unflinching look at where heads need support most and offers practical advice on how to sharpen the emotional tools needed to do one of the most critical jobs in education.
Viv said: “I hope the book will leave readers feeling uplifted and inspired to create better futures for our children – without fear of losing themselves to the job.”
Staying A Head is published by Integrity, RRP £14.99. ISBN 978-0-9929250-0-0 Available on Amazon, Kindle and at all good book shops on 7th November 2014
