I’ve been thinking a lot lately about ‘Thresholds”. It’s a word that we don’t use often in education, but I think we should. If we did, we’d understand more about the profound nature of change that happens across the course of a leader’s life.
No one tells you how hard it is to cross a threshold. You take on a new role and within the blink of an eye you are expected to have moved from novice to expert .
But we all know that just isn’t the case!
The moment you accept the role — the title changes overnight, but the inner transformation? That takes far longer.
There is so much you must let go of:
The old certainties, the comfort of being “in control” , the identity that once defined you
And in its place? A space in-between.
Where questions emerge like fog at dawn:
- Who am I now?
- Can I really lead in this new space?
- Will I still be enough when I no longer have the answers?
This is the liminal space (another phrase I am fond of) the emotional and psychological terrain that few ever acknowledge. Especially in our sector.
Education moves fast. Performance matters. And so you keep going…
Even when an inner voice is whispering,
“Pause. There is something you need to attend to within.”
Too often, the education system fails to offer the kind of support women need when they step into roles that were not necessarily designed with them in mind.
That’s why She Leads was created.
A space that holds female MAT CEOs in this powerful threshold moment. Not just with strategy, but with wisdom, support and integrity. So you don’t have to shape-shift to lead… you get to lead as you.
