For me, Heart and Soul has to be at the centre of all school leadership endeavours. Yet, I have witnessed that in the whirlwind of school leadership, the daily demands easily overshadow what brought many into the role in the first place.
As a school leader, you are tasked with immense responsibilities. The vast majority of which are not known to many who have not stepped in your shoes, Yet you alone ( and perhaps a few other trusted colleagues) know the added burden of responsibility that these additional responsibilities bring. It is no mean feat to be expected to act as lead practitioner, therapist, social worker, administrator, family liaison officer, plus a whole host of other roles, all in the course of one day! It’s no wonder that, over time, many leaders can feel as if they’ve lost touch with their original purpose.
This disconnection can feel particularly intense for those in their 40s and 50s. The once-bright flame of passion and conviction may feel like a distant memory buried beneath layers of responsibility and stress. But here’s the truth: leadership—especially in education—isn’t just a job; it’s a calling. It’s a vocation that requires both head and heart, intellect and soul. It’s my belief that for many, the decision to enter educational leadership wasn’t just a career choice but a response to something deeper. Something I call ‘an inner calling’—a pull to make a difference, to nurture and guide, to create environments where young people can thrive. But as time goes on, the pressures of leadership can obscure this inner calling. Vocation is rooted in purpose, and when external systems of accountability overshadow purpose, it’s easy to feel adrift, unsure if you’re still on the right path. Yet, this calling is still there, quietly waiting to be rediscovered.
