When I look back on my time as a Headteacher, I can recall numerous times when I felt at sea and without an anchor to steady both my troubled heart and mind.
Even though I had taken my school out of special measures, the weight of responsibility seemed to grow heavier each year. I constantly felt pulled in multiple directions, balancing staff needs, student outcomes and policy changes, along with the challenges of having just become a new mother!
And I now know, from over fifteen years of experience as an Executive coach, that many school leaders have experienced something similar. When so much is going on, having to juggle the personal and professional demands of life, it’s easy for internal doubts to creep in, leading to a sense of internal dissonance.
Deep inside, this dissonance manifests as an unsettling feeling that something isn’t quite right. You may begin questioning your decisions or second-guessing your abilities. That once clear, confident voice inside you becomes muffled, and suddenly, you’re operating in a constant state of doubt and uncertainty.
The Cost of Internal Dissonance
Internal dissonance can start subtly, but over time, it erodes your confidence. It’s that nagging sense that you’re not measuring up or that you’re missing something, even when you’re giving everything you’ve got. In leadership, this can be particularly dangerous. When you’re unsure of yourself, your decisions may be clouded, your relationships strained, and your ability to lead with clarity and vision diminished.
