Often as an Executive Coach, I hear myself saying to my coachee, “The answer isn’t in your head” and I am met with a puzzled look. It’s happened to all of us. We are faced with a life challenge or big decision, and we rack our brains for answers. We replay over and over in our heads, yet clarity eludes us. Sound familiar?
In Western culture, we’re conditioned to rely on intellect, believing our minds hold all the answers. But often, when the mind feels full and answers remain out of reach, it’s time to tap into another type of intelligence—the wisdom of the body.
Being a Mindfulness Teacher as we as a coach, in my coaching practice, I help clients move out of their heads and into the present moment by reconnecting with their bodies and senses. These simple yet profound shifts can create the clarity that the mind alone can’t achieve. And it’s not rocket science!
Here are some practical ways to maintain that vital mind-body connection in your day-to-day life:
✔ Step away from devices – Give your mind a break.
✔ Move your body – Walk, stretch, or dance to your favourite tune.
✔ De-stress intentionally – Yoga, breathing exercises, running, or even laughter can work wonders.
✔ Connect with nature – Take a stroll outside or spend time with uplifting people (or pets).
✔ Practice mindful activities – Fully engage in daily routines, like preparing and savouring meals.
Last week, after an intense couple of weeks, I treated myself to a day retreat with the wonderful Martha Cuffy https://marthacuffy.com/. Halfway through the morning, after some deeply restorative relaxation and tension-release exercises, we journaled. And then—boom!—the answers to my current life dilemmas began flowing effortlessly as if the pen had a life of its own. I’m not even a big journaler so I was astonished with the wisdom that flowed onto the paper. Thank you, Martha Cuffy. I am grateful that I listened to the wisdom of my body, telling me to take some time out.
Sometimes, the clarity we seek doesn’t come from thinking harder but from stepping back, releasing tension, and listening to our whole selves.
